Manjakani (Oak Gall)
Manjakani (Quercus Infectoria), one of the popular medicinal plants used traditionally in postpartum care and treatment of various ailments. This plant is a small tree or shrub about two meters high and is mainly found in Asia, Greece, and Iran. Its galls are round-shaped abnormal growth found arising on the young branches of the oak tree due to the attack by the stinging gall-wasp. The galls of Quercus infectoria are globular in shape and from 10 to 25 mm in diameter. They have a short, basal stalk and numerous rounded projections on the surface. They are hard and heavy, usually sinking in water.
In Malaysia, the galls known as “biji manjakani”, which have been used among Malays to restore postpartum uterine elasticity and also stimulate the contraction of vaginal muscles. The old folk’s women believed that “manjakani” is a ‘magical’ fruit that has many usage especially to women. In Indian traditional medicine, it is a constituent of toothpowder or toothpaste for treatment of gum and oral cavity diseases.
Sirih (Piper Betel Leaf)
Sirih (Piper betle leaf) commonly known as betel vine belongs to the family Piperaceae. It is a popular medicinal plant in Asia. The leaf is the most widely used and studied part of the betel vine. There are chewing habit practices of betel leaves in many countries which are believed beneficial for avoiding bad breath, strengthening the gum, preserving the teeth, and stimulating the digestive system. In traditional medicine practices, betel leaves are used for vaginal douching in Indonesia, as a gargle mouthwash in India and Thailand, and as a treatment for dental problems, headaches, arthritis, and joint pain in Malaysia. In Srilanka, the betel leaf juice is used to treat skin ailments. Additionally, its boiled leaves could be used as cough medicine, tonic, or astringent. Traditional applications of betel leaves are related to their antibacterial and antifungal properties.
Kacip Fatimah
Kacip fatimah (Labisia Pumuila) is one of the most popular and potent ingredient used in traditional herbal preparation or jamus for afterbirth care. Kacip Fatimah is traditionally used to maintain a healthy female reproductive system, to help tighten and lubricate, and to enhance sexual function. Kacip Fatimah is rich in phytoestrogen and isoflavones, that may ease menopausal symptoms. In Malaysia, Labisia pumila is popularly known locally as Selusuh Fatimah (literally Fatimah's childbirth medicine) and Kacip Fatimah (Fatimahs betel scissors). The Labisia pumila roots were found to contain a benzoquinone derivative and mixture of resorcinol derivatives deficiency.
Paste prepared from the leaves and coconut oil is rubbed on baby's abdomen to relieve stomach discomfort. Kacip Fatimah has been traditionally used by the Malay women for many generations in childbirth in inducing and eases delivery, as a post partum medication to help the birth channel, to regain body strength, regulate menstrual cycle and avoid painful and to alleviate menopausal symptoms. The plant is traditionally boiled and the water extraction is taken as a drink. Other traditional uses include treating dysentery, rheumatism, and gonnorhoea. This plant will also help to firm the abdominal muscles. Scientific studies found that the medicinal properties and biological activities of Kacip Fatimah are due to the presence of phyto-estrogen (plant estrogen) that is naturally found in this plant.
